Happy Easter from the coop.  My dogwood is in full bloom, so it must be Spring.

The chickies are growing like mad!  They look like chickens!    And, although I love her dearly, Ms. Quiche is quite, what's the word?, STRANGE LOOKING.

In this shot, she appears to be modeling her new capri pants that match her top....she is one weird chicken that's for sure.

They like the ladder, but seem a bit confused about whether the door is shut or open.

Sad day at the blog....my little Ms. Chocolate is missing.  She somehow managed to squeeze through the chain link fence (she was quite tiny), and is now missing.  Since we do have a hawk in the area, I have a hunch that she is gone.  today I will spend making the run more secure, I know, locking the barn door and all, but I do still have 4 little chickies I am responsible for!  Here is a picture to remember her by!

Hooray!  We are moving into our new home....sun is out, kinda, and I am well past ready to have them in their own stinky abode, LOL.

they seem right at home already!  Put in a thermometer so I can be sure not to make chicken popsicles!

Last Night in Cardboard

Wow, 4 weeks old tomorrow.  We are enjoying some outside time and the gorgeous backyard scenery, much better than cardboard.

Good thing the coop is done.  It is supposed to rain tonight, but tomorrow, we will be moving to our new home.....Yippee!

Our new little red coop

Here are some details on the coop:

I finally decided on a paint color, RED, and here are a few photos of the almost finished coop.  Just need to do the roof and then some small finishing up stuff.  I spent the day weeding the area where the chicks will be living, so things are really moving along.  Good thing too, because the chicks are quickly out-growing their temporary living conditions in a cardboard box.  And, they have figured out how to tip over the watering station so that the box got all soggy and fell apart.  good thing I had a spare box the same size, thanks to the fact that my daughter recently purchased something that came in really big boxes.  Here are a few photos of the coop in its new color!

The nest boxes hang on the outside, so you don't need to disturb the princesses when collecting eggs...in my dreams anyway.

Here is a picture of the "chick door", notice how it slides up and down.

Coop Update:

Wow, we are getting so close.  Just need to finish the roof and the fencing in the run area.  Here are a few pictures of our new beauty!

OH MY!  I guess we better put the coop building in high gear.  I was working on my computer and heard a very loud chirping coming from the "guest room" aka, Chicken room.  When I went in only 4 little chickies were in their box and Ms. Meringue was strutting around the room, by herself, wondering where everyone else had gone.  She was not happy!  So, I put her back with her pals and she immediately began to tell everyone about the world outside the cardboard.

Coop Preview!

Well, progress on the coop is moving along quickly.  Dave (my hubby) has the basic shell done, you can see him here sizing up the chickie door....

He has also made the sliding cover for the chickie door.  It sorta looks like a chicken guillotine, LOL.

And the nest boxes are complete, just need some hinges and they are good to go.  He made them on the outside, so we can collect eggs without going inside...so far we figured the cost of each egg will be roughly $25.00.

He even put in a new lino floor (easier to clean) which is quite nice, better than the kitchen floor in my first house.   More pictures to come, stay tuned.

My little girls are growing up so fast.  I TRIED to take a picture for Easter with them all in one small ceramic basket, but they really didn't want to cooperate....it's like trying to herd cats!

First try...one was missing!

Next time, we just want to stand on the edge or hide in the corner.

Or just look away from the camera altogether....sigh.

I even tried a different basket, but the result was not wonderful...oh well, it was fun!

"Moving on Up"  Hard to believe it, but my little chickies have grown so much in just over a week.  When I first brought them home, they could crawl inside the feeder, but as you can see, that is no longer the case.  Check out our old home, we were getting into quite a few conflicts due to the lack of space.
As you can see, our new home is huge!  We love it, and in a few short minutes, we were chattering, eating, drinking and well, you know.
The "claw" has chosen and helped relocate my babies to their new home.  Along with moving day, came the dreaded "behind check" and sure enough, two of us had to suffer the humiliation of having our tiny backsides washed because we were carrying a little too much baggage, "pasted up" in chicken lingo.  Once the bathing was done, both the little girls ran to the feeder and began to eat like there was no tomorrow...I guess having a way to empty their stomachs made them hungry!
At first we thought this might be too big, But the girls have been taking flying lessons by running the length of the box and hopping into the air and spreading our wings...hope they don't jump clear out!

I am sure it won't be long until even this huge home will be too small, better get busy on building that coop.
